Other positions held at Nike: Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer (2003-present)
Jim Carter is the General Counsel and manager of Nike’s legal service providers. He manages the lawyers, legal assistants, administrative assistants and others working within Nike legal. Nike legal provides services directly and indirectly to the regions, subsidiaries and divisions of Nike. Jim also has management responsibility for Nike’s experts in government and public affairs. In addition, he is the executive liaison to the Nike Employee Networks Council (NEAC).
Before joining Nike, Jim was a shareholder in the Portland law firm of Schulte, Anderson, Downes and Carter for 20 years. He has also clerked in the state court for now federal judge Robert E. Jones.
Jim is chair of the Classroom Law Project, a civics education program that sponsors the We the People constitutional competition and other educational programs throughout Oregon for students in grades K-12. Jim is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the University of Oregon Law School. His interests include travel, family, golf, running and cycling.
Among Jim’s favorite Nike innovations is the Bowerman Series running shoe. Bill Bowerman and his wife were Jim’s guests at the Oregon Indoor Track Meet in 1980, where they discussed the weight of the shoes. Every time I spoke with Bill, the conversation always included his intense commitment to reducing the weight that runners carry on their feet, he said. The Bowerman Series shoes are truly about remembering the man and what was most important to him. |
