James A. Whitlock, MD, a pediatric oncologist, is a national leader in childhood leukemia and the development of new therapies for childhood cancers. He is the Craig-Weaver Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville. He also serves as the Vice Chair for New Agents and Relapse studies of the Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Committee of the Children’s Oncology Group. He has held numerous leadership positions in other national and international organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutics Investigators’ Consortium, and the Histiocyte Society.
Dr. Whitlock has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including Phi Beta Kappa, the David T. Karzon Award for outstanding research during his residency, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He has been listed in The Best Doctors in America on multiple occasions. In 2005, the Pediatric Oncology program at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital Program was ranked #7 nationally for cancer care in Child Magazine’s survey of Best Children’s Hospitals.
Dr. Whitlock’s research has focused on the biology and treatment of childhood acute leukemias, the development of new drugs for the treatment of childhood cancers, and the biology and treatment of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. He has authored and co-authored more than 60 journal articles and book chapters and is a frequent reviewer for leading journals.
After earning his medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, he completed his residency in Pediatrics at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. He remained at Vanderbilt to pursue fellowships in the Division of Genetics and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. In 1990, Dr. Whitlock joined the Vanderbilt faculty.
