J. Craig Boretz is vice president and chief tax officer of Con-way Inc. (previously known as CNF Inc.) is a $4.2 billion transportation and logistics company with businesses in less-than-truckload motor carriage, truckload and brokerage services, logistics, warehousing, supply chain management and trailer manufacturing.
In this position, Mr. Boretz is responsible for global strategic tax planning, tax structuring of business transactions, tax-controversy defense and the oversight of tax compliance for all Con-way subsidiaries. Since joining CNF in May 1996 as director of tax services, he has been instrumental in making CNF/Con-way a more tax-efficient organization. Among other accomplishments, he was responsible for evaluating the company’s worldwide tax structure and negotiating the reduction or elimination of certain historical tax exposure items.
Mr. Boretz has more than 25 years of experience in the tax industry. Prior to joining CNF, he held several increasingly responsible accounting and tax positions with NACCO Materials Handling Group, a company that designs, manufactures and markets the Hyster and Yale brand of lift truck. Prior to that, he held senior tax positions with the public accounting firms Ernst & Young and Arthur Andersen.
Mr. Boretz is a member of the tax committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as well as a member representative of the Pacific Northwest International Trade Association, the Tax Executives Institute and the Financial Executives Institute.
Mr. Boretz grew up primarily in Los Angeles, CA and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University, Long Beach. He also holds an MBA in finance from the University of Oregon and is a certified public accountant. Mr. Boretz is based at Con-way’s administrative and technology headquarters in Portland, OR.
