Sir Ian joined the board of BP as a non-executive director in 1997 and was appointed deputy chairman in 1999. He is the senior non-executive director, chairman of the audit committee and a member of the chairman’s, the nomination and the remuneration committees. Sir Ian qualified in 1967 as a chartered accountant with Cooper Brothers (now PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP) and was admitted as a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1967. In 1969, he joined Bass Charrington Ltd, later Bass PLC. He was appointed finance director in 1978, group managing director in 1984 and chairman and chief executive in 1987, the position he retained until becoming executive chairman in 2000. At the end of 2003, he retired from the chairman’s role and the board of what was then Intercontinental Hotels Group PLC, the company having sold its brewing interests in 2000 and demerged its hotels and soft drinks interests from its pub business in 2003. He is also the senior independent non-executive director of GlaxoSmithKline plc and a non-executive director of the Sara Lee Corporation. He is a member of the CBI President’s committee. He was previously on the boards of The Boots Company PLC and Lloyds TSB PLC. Sir Ian was knighted in 1995. |
