Herbert H. Jacobi, 71, was named to the board of directors of Southern Union Company in December 2004. He is chairman of the board’s Independent Directors’ Committee and a member of its Audit, Finance, Compensation, Investment and Corporate Governance Committees.
Since 1998, Jacobi has served as chairman of the supervisory board of HSBC Trunkaus & Burkhardt KgaA, a pre-eminent German private bank established in 1785. Prior to being elected to this position (now honorary), he had been chairman of the managing partners of the bank for nearly 17 years. He also held positions since 1995 as non-executive director of the Midland Bank plc, London, and from 1996 to 1998 as group general manager of the HSBC Group.
Jacobi began his banking career in 1961 as an economist with Deutsche Bank. He joined Chase Manhattan Bank, New York City, in 1964, becoming general manager and CEO of their German branches in 1970, and area director, Central Europe, in 1972. In 1975, he was appointed executive vice president, corporate banking. He served as managing partner of BHF-Bank, Frankfurt, from 1977 until October 1981, when he joined HSBC Trinkaus & Burkhardt. He was president of the North-Rhine Westfalia Stock Exchange from 1990 until 1999.
Jacobi also serves on the board of directors of the Gillette Company, Boston, Deutsche Investors’ Capital AG, Dusseldorf, and MADAUS AG, Koln and WILO AG, Dortmund. He continues to serve as honorary president of the German American Association Stuben-Schurz e.V.
Studying at Rutgers University, New York University and at the universities of Frankfurt and Mainz, Jacobi earned a graduate degree in international economics.
Jacobi resides in Palm Beach, Florida.
