Chairman of Portugal Telecom, elected at the General Meeting of 21st April 2006. He was born in 1943 and graduated at the age of 25 in Company Organization and Management from the Instituto Universitário de Évora.
Between 1968 and 71 he comprised the Technical Secretariat of the Presidency of the Council. In 1971/ 72 he integrated the cabinets of the State Minister and of the Secretary of State for Planning.
He was an assistant professor at the Instituto Universitário de Évora in 1972 and until 1974 he was Director of Planning Services and Projects of the Junta Nacional de Investigação Científica e Tecnológica (National Agency for Scientific and Technological Research).
Between 1974/ 76 he occupied the position of Director General of Regional Action of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and then became Chief of the Civilian Household of the President of the Republic until 1979. In the same year he took on the position of Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Portugal to the O.E.C.D.
In 1981 he was Manager of Standart Eléctrica and M. N. Tiago, Construções, S.A.. Between 1981/ 87 he was Managing Director of the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida and until 1990, Chairman of IFADAP- Instituto Financeiro de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento da Agricultura e Pescas (Financial Institute for the Support of Development of Agriculture and Fisheries).
Between the years 1989 and 92 he was then Chairman of the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida and of Sojornal - Sociedade Jornalística e Editorial, S.A. from 1990 to 2001. During the same period he was also Director of Controljornal SGPS, S.A..
In 1992 he once again in front of the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida and in1993 took on the presidency of the Fiscal Council of Seguros e Pensões Gere, SGPS (BCP Group) and related companies.
Member of the Strategic Council of Banco Finantia since 2001.
Between 2002 and September 2004 he was chairman of the Executive Committee of Lusomundo Media. In 2003 he was nominated Director of Portugal Telecom, a position that is held to date.
