Harold McGraw III was elected chairman of The McGraw-Hill Companies in December 1999; chief executive officer in 1998; and president and chief operating officer in 1993. He has been a member of The McGraw-Hill Companies’ Board of Directors since 1987.
Mr. McGraw has led a transformation of the Corporation, consolidating 15 diverse units into three focused business segments, each one a market leader. In Financial Services, Standard & Poor's is the world’s leading provider of financial analyses and risk assessments. In Education, McGraw-Hill Education is a leader in the U.S. K-12 education market as well as in the higher education and professional markets. And in Information & Media, the Corporation is a preeminent provider of essential news, information, analysis and solutions globally through BusinessWeek, J.D. Power and Associates and leading portals for the energy, construction and aviation industries.
The McGraw-Hill Companies had sales of $6.3 billion in 2006. The Corporation has a strong history of growth. Over the last 10 years, it has outperformed the S&P 500, producing an annualized total return of 21.5% versus 8.4% for the S&P 500.
Mr. McGraw, 59, joined The McGraw-Hill Companies in 1980 and has held a number of positions with increasing responsibilities, including vice president, Corporate Planning; publisher, Aviation Week & Space Technology; president, McGraw-Hill Publications Company; and president, McGraw-Hill Financial Services Company.
He serves on the Board of Directors of United Technologies and ConocoPhillips. He is chairman of Business Roundtable, chairman of the Emergency Committee for American Trade (ECAT) and a member of the Business Council. Mr. McGraw is a member of the State Department's Advisory Committee on Transformational Diplomacy and he also served as a member of President George W. Bush’s Transition Advisory Committee on Trade.
Mr. McGraw is chairman of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy. Additionally, Mr. McGraw serves on the boards of Carnegie Hall, the National Council on Economic Education, New York Public Library, National Organization on Disability, National Academy Foundation, Partnership for New York City, Prep for Prep and the United States Council for International Business.
Mr. McGraw received an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1976 and a B.A. from Tufts University in 1972. |
