Former NBA and Morehouse College guard Harold Ellis begins his fifth season as a scout for the Hawks, and second as the club’s minor league coordinator. Ellis focuses on minor-league and college scouting. He previously was an assistant coach in 2001-02 on the inaugural staff of the National Basketball Association Development League's Roanoke Dazzle.
A former pro player who has played in four leagues (the NBA, Continental Basketball Association, the U.S. Basketball League and Greece), Ellis is a 1992 graduate of Morehouse who spent three seasons in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers (1993-94 and '94-95), where he was a teammate of Hawks legend and Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, and Denver Nuggets (1997-98). The 6-5 guard-forward averaged 5.8 points in his NBA career.
An outstanding NCAA Division II player who led the Maroon Tigers in scoring in each of his four seasons (1988-92), Ellis became only the fifth player from a historically black college or university (HBCU) to have his uniform number (#30) retired. Morehouse had a 90-30 record in Ellis' four years there.
This past summer, Ellis led the Rome (GA) Gladiators of the World Basketball Association (WBA) to their second consecutive league title. He earned Coach of the Year honors in the process for the second straight time, and has led the club to a 42-6 mark over that span. Also the team’s General Manager, Ellis was recently named by ProBasketballNews.com as the second-best coaching talent currently in the minors. Additionally, he has spent time coaching with Rockford (CBA) and Las Vegas (IBL).
Ellis, the son of educators, has a master's degree in sports management and administration from the U.S. Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in sports psychology at San Diego University for Integrative Studies. He attended Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta.
