Harold Shain was named president and chief operating officer of Newsweek in March 1998. He is responsible for Newsweek's day-to-day business operations. Previously, Shain served as executive vice president, general manager, and U.S. publisher, directing Newsweek's ad Sales and marketing staffs, and the magazine's overall advertising strategy.
Shain took on his advertising/marketing responsibilities in July 1992 and became U.S. publisher in August 1993. He was promoted to executive vice president and general manager in March 1991, overseeing circulation, customer services, information systems, and finance. Shain became senior vice president in October 1989 and vice president of circulation in 1987. He joined Newsweek in 1986 as circulation director.
For two years prior to joining Newsweek, Shain worked at Boardroom Reports, a privately held New York-based publishing company, where he was vice president of circulation, fulfillment, marketing, manufacturing, and production.
From May 1983 through November 1984, Shain was circulation director for the launch of Family Computing, a Scholastic, Inc. monthly. From 1981 to 1983, he was circulation manager at New York magazine. Before that, he was circulation business manager for Times-Mirror Magazines, including Popular Science, Outdoor Life, Golf and Ski. He started in publishing as an accountant with Fairchild Publications in 1976.
Shain has a BA in economics and accounting from Brooklyn College. He is a 1990 graduate of the Stanford University Executive MBA Program.
