Harley E. Riedel was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mr. Riedel was admitted to the bar in Florida in 1974. He is a graduate of Baylor University, B.A. 1971, and the University of Florida, JD with high honors 1974 (Order of the Coif), where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the University of Florida Law Review. He received book awards for the highest academic score in seven law school courses. All three of his student works (case comment, commentary, and note) were selected for publication, and each received an award (the Gertrude Brick award, the George W. Milam award, and the Alumni Association award, respectively) as the outstanding student work for that quarter. He was a founder and has served as a director, President and Chairman of the Tampa Bay Bankruptcy Bar Association. He has also served as an officer and director of the Tampa Bay Federal Bar Association, as chairman of the Hillsborough County Law Library, and on The Florida Bar Grievances Committee for the 13th Judicial Circuit. He served as a member of the Committee on Local Bankruptcy Rules for the Middle District of Florida from 1985 to 1998. He has been listed in the 1989-90 and all subsequent editions of the "Best Lawyers in America," in all editions of "America's Leading Lawyers for Business," in all editions of Florida Trend's Florida Legal Elite, and in all editions of "Florida Super Lawyers." He is listed in Who's Who Legal U.S.A. and is listed as one of the Law Dragon's top lawyers. He has spoken and written on bankruptcy-related topics for the American Bar Association, The American Bankruptcy Institute, The Florida Bar, and numerous other legal and business groups. He is the principal author of the section on Chapter 11 Practice in the West Publishing Company publication, "Norton Handbook for Bankruptcy Trustees, Debtors-in-Possession, and Committees." He has headed up the firm's representation of the Creditors' Committee of Anchor Glass, LincNet, Inc., JumboSports Inc., Lykes Bros. Steamship, Bicoastal Corporation, Koger Properties, The Koger Partnership, American Ship Building Company, West Charlotte Utilities, Barret Home, Provincetown-Boston Airlines, Basset Enterprises, Zephyr Rock, Family Group, Affiliated of Florida, Retail Networks, Automotive Service Centers, and numerous other cases. He has served as a mediator in successfully aiding parties in the resolution of a number of complicated bankruptcy and commercial disputes. He was appointed in 2003 by the United States District Court to be a Special Master in connection with litigation involving extensive agricultural operations in Florida. He is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. His memberships also include the Hillsborough County Bar Association, Federal and American Bar Associations, The Florida Bar, and the American Bankruptcy Institute.
