Hamilton is a member of the litigation team in the Madison office of Godfrey & Kahn. While his practice includes a broad range of commercial litigation matters, Hamilton's particular focus remains white collar counseling, defense and internal investigations. Hamilton is a native of Madison, where he attended West High School before moving to Spring Green, Wis., in 1990 and graduating from River Valley High School in 1993. Hamilton earned his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a perfect GPA and was active in local politics. Hamilton then attended the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign-Urbana where he earned two CALI awards and worked for the school's Public Interest Law Foundation. While in law school he also competed on the national moot court team and served on the Illinois Law Review. Hamilton graduated summa cum laude and Order of the Coif in 2000. After graduating from the University of Illinois, Hamilton clerked for the Honorable Henry A. Politz in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. After his clerkship, Hamilton joined Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, LLP, in San Francisco, where he worked as a litigation associate for three years. While at Gibson Dunn, Hamilton received the Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service Award from the San Francisco Bar Association for his work on numerous pro bono matters for low-income individuals. In March 2004, Hamilton left Gibson Dunn and joined the United States Attorney's Office in San Diego as a criminal prosecutor. While working as an Assistant United States Attorney, Hamilton prosecuted more than 20 federal felony jury trials, primarily involving federal drug smuggling charges. Hamilton also conducted investigations of large-scale drug and alien smuggling organizations, as well as bank robberies, identity theft, and related federal offenses. Hamilton left his AUSA position in San Diego in the fall of 2007 and joined Godfrey & Kahn, primarily to take advantage of the better weather in Madison.
