After receiving a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1961 he joined NEC Corporation where he has long been involved in semiconductors operations. He served as General Manager of the VLSI Development Division and the Microcomputer Products Division before being elected to the Board of Directors in 1988. After serving as Senior Vice President Executive Vice President and Senior Executive Vice President he was appointed to his present position in 1999.
He has actively been part of several Japanese industry organizations including serving as Chairman of CIAJ (Communications Industry Association of Japan) from 1999 to 2000 Chairman of JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association) from 2003 to 2004 and Co-Chairman of Committee on Europe of Nippon Keidanren since 2000. He was elected IPSJ (Information Processing Society of Japan) president in May 2007.
Mr. Sasaki received the Award of Persons of Scientific and Technological Merits from the Science and Technology Agency of Japan in 1995. He became a fellow of IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) in 1996. He received the Third Millennium Medal in 2000 and the Robert N. Noyce Medal in 2001 from IEEE and he became a life fellow of IEEE in 2001. He also became a foreign associate of the National Academy of Engineering(USA) in 2000. He was selected as a fellow of the Institute of Electronics Information and Communication Engineers(IEICE) in 2000 and received the Achievement Award in 2001 from IEICE and became a honorary member of IEICE in 2002. Mr. Sasaki received the Deming Prize for Individuals in 2005 and he received l'ordre de la Legion d'Honneur (Chevalier) from the French Government in February 2006. Mr. Sasaki also received Sheffield Fellowship from Yale University in October 2006.
