Graham K. Thornton is executive director of Northrop Grumman for the United Kingdom. In this corporate lead executive role, he is the company’s primary contact with U.K. and other international military, government and commercial customers.
Northrop Grumman has more than 500 U.K. employees. Key activities include a Ministry of Defence contract to provide maintenance, technical support and design engineering services for the Royal Air Force fleet of E-3D Sentry airborne warning and control system aircraft. The company provides public safety systems, air traffic voice communications systems, defence electronics, marine navigation systems and information technology systems for both U.K. and international customers. Northrop Grumman also supports the innovative e-Borders programme, which will deliver timely data, information, intelligence and risk assessment to relevant government agencies on all passengers seeking to enter or leave the United Kingdom.
Prior to joining Northrop Grumman, Thornton provided business development and strategic planning consulting services to a number of defence and high technology companies.
Previously, Thornton worked for TRW Aeronautical Systems as vice president of business development, and was responsible for worldwide marketing and sales, as well as management of all new product introductions.
Earlier, Thornton worked for Smiths Group PLC as aerospace group director business development, where he managed strategic marketing and business development. Thornton also held positions of increasing responsibility with Dowty & Smiths Industries Controls Ltd., Schlumberger Industries and Standard Telephones & Cables.
Thornton earned a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in physics from the University of Southampton. He is a chartered physicist and mechanical engineer; a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society; a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts; and a member of the Institute of Physics. Earlier in his career, he lectured in engineering science at the University of Oxford.
