A graduate (1963) with a degree in aeronautical engineering of the Milan Polytechnic Institute, he has also made his academic career there. A professor since 1975, since 1983 he has held the chair of steel constructions at the school of engineering and since 2002 has been president of the Institute. The author of many publications (which have also been published abroad), he has carried on an extensive scientific activity. Alongside his academic activity, since 1964 he has worked with several engineering firms and in 1970 founded an engineering services company (B.C.V. Progetti), where he has been involved in numerous projects as designer, site engineer, and consultant, both in Italy and abroad. A member of the National Research Council’s committee on regulations for constructing with steel from 1970 to 2000, he was a member of the Board of steel experts from 1975 to 1985 and chairman in 1981-82, as well as a member of the chairman’s council of the Italian Calibration Service from 1997 to 2002. He has been involved in the renovation of several important monumental buildings (including the Accademia Bridge in Venice) and has coordinated research activities in the field of construction both in Italy and abroad. He has been a director of Enel since May 2005.
