After working on development projects in Chad and Bolivia and experiencing investment banking in London, I chose to join IFC as a member of the Global Transaction Team in 2001 because I wanted to work in private sector development and make a difference in other people’s lives while continuing to be challenged and learn.
During my first three years at IFC, I worked on a number of infrastructure projects in railways, ports, airports, and privatization of public services in Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica, Yemen, Pakistan, Cambodia, and the Philippines. I was also involved in setting up a project development facility in the Balkans. These diverse and challenging experiences, coupled with rapidly increasing levels of responsibility, have allowed me to greatly improve my business judgment, my negotiating skills and interpersonal skills, my ability to structure projects, my ability to work in teams and to communicate, and my understanding of diverse cultures.
I have also enjoyed significant professional developmental opportunities. In addition to hands-on learning and active mentoring from experienced colleagues, I was encouraged to attend a number of internal and external courses (including a six-week credit training course, a Harvard Business School course on corporate restructurings, seminars on negotiations and time management and the CFA program). I have currently been given the opportunity to participate in a tailored Leadership Development Program that requires staff to take on projects that stretch leadership skills and expose them to corporatewide issues.
