Dr. Kliman focuses on life sciences investing with a special interest in medical devices and ophthalmic technologies. He serves on the board of directors of a broad portfolio of InterWest life sciences companies, including IntraLase, Ophthonix, ReVision Optics, Epocrates, Archus Orthopedics, and Spiration. He was an early lead investor in IntraLase, a manufacturer of novel eye lasers for LASIK that completed a successful IPO in 2004, and Spinal Dynamics, a spine surgery device company that was acquired in 2002 by Medtronic for $270M.Prior to InterWest Partners, Dr. Kliman was a healthcare investor at TA Associates and at Norwest Venture Capital. As a practicing ophthalmologist, he was the former West Coast director of LCA Vision, a highly successful LASIK services company, and served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts New England Eye Center.Dr. Kliman received his B.A. from Harvard University, M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and M.B.A. from Stanford University. A trained retinal specialist, he performed his retina fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary with a research focus on new pharmacologic treatments for AMD. While at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, he pioneered the first successful use of photodynamic therapy for treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), the underlying cause of vision loss from advanced AMD. |
