Jerry Munitz is senior counsel in the firm's Bankruptcy & Creditors' Rights Group. His more than 43 years at the bar have been spent in insolvency and reorganization law. He has represented financial institutions holding fully secured, undersecured and unsecured claims in out-of-court restructurings and chapter 11 cases. In addition, Mr. Munitz has represented lessors of real and personal property, defendants in voidable transfer actions, and parties desiring to acquire the assets of financially distressed businesses. Mr. Munitz formerly had extensive experience as debtor's counsel in such major chapter 11 cases as North American Car Corporation, AM International Inc., Pettibone Corporation, Kroh Brothers Inc. and the Kassuba entities. Before joining Goldberg Kohn, Mr. Munitz was the senior bankruptcy partner at Winston & Strawn. He started his legal career at the law firm of Norman H. Nachman, eventually becoming partner and principal in Nachman, Munitz & Sweig, Ltd. Mr. Munitz is a contributing author to Collier on Bankruptcy (15th ed.), Collier on Bankruptcy Practice Guide and Bankruptcy Litigation Manual, published by Aspen Law & Business Inc. He has written and lectured extensively on insolvency issues. A representative topic list includes: reasons for commencing a chapter 11 case; voluntary and involuntary cases; adequate protection; automatic stay; use, sale or lease of property; obtaining credit; executory contracts and unexpired leases; property of the estate; avoidance powers, including the leveraged buyout as a potential fraudulent transfer; appointment of trustees and examiners in chapter 11 cases; Section 1111(b); and confirmation of a chapter 11 plan and effect of confirmation. From 1955 to 1957, Mr. Munitz served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged with the rank of first lieutenant.
