George Warhop Profile :
Offensive Line - San Francisco 49ers Ltd.

George Warhop Biography :

George Warhop enters his third season as the 49ers offensive line coach. He was named to the position on January 31, 2005. Warhop’s 2006 offensive line plowed the way for RB Frank Gore’s franchise record 1,695 rushing yards, tops in the NFC. The unit was able to help Gore churn out 100-yard games nine times over the course of the season while finishing with a sixth overall NFL ranking in the rushing game and second NFL finish in average yards per rush (5.0 avg.). Led by future Hall of Fame G Larry Allen, who played under Warhop at Dallas from 2003-04, the line also enabled QB Alex Smith to show dramatic improvement and set career highs in every offensive category in his first full season as a starter. The line was also able to significantly decrease Smith’s sack total from 48 sacks in 2005 to 36 in 2006. While Allen earned his 11th Pro Bowl honor, the third under Warhop’s direction, C Eric Heitmann flourished as the team’s vocal and physical anchor in the trenches, G Justin Smiley and T Kwame Harris started all 16 contests and second-year G/T Adam Snyder continued to progress and show his powerful upside in reserve and starting roles. Warhop joined San Francisco after spending two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. In his two years with the Cowboys, Warhop’s offensive line helped account for 3,768 rushing yards, 25 rushing touchdowns and 216 first downs. Under Warhop’s tutelage, T Flozell Adams earned his first Pro Bowl nod after the 2003 season, and was named by his NFL peers as first alternate in 2004. Allen, his teammate in the trenches, was also named to the Pro Bowl during Warhop’s stretch in 2003 and 2004 for his outstanding performance at guard after missing the all-star game in Hawaii in 2002. Prior to his stint with Dallas, he spent five seasons as the offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals. During his five years with the Cardinals offensive line, Warhop tutored a group who was able to steadily decline the quarterback sacks allowed from the 78 surrendered in 1997 before his arrival, to 50 (1998), 45 (1999), 35 (2000) to 29 (2001). The latter was the second-fewest in franchise history in a 16-game season, trailing only the 22-sack effort of the 1978 line. Largely because of Warhop and his troops’ work, Arizona averaged 4.5 yards per carry on the ground, the tenth-best per carry average in the league and the team's highest average in 17 seasons. In 1998, his first season with the Cardinals, Warhop's linemen allowed 50 sacks, a 28-sack improvement over the previous season. Warhop's first Cardinals’ line also merited credit for Arizona's 18 rushing touchdowns, exceeding the combined totals of the previous two seasons (eight in 1996 and nine in 1997). Prior to joining the Cardinals, Warhop spent the 1996-97 campaigns as an offensive line assistant with the St. Louis Rams, working with Jim Hanifan. Warhop was offensive line coach at Southern Methodist University in 1993 and then served in a similar capacity at Boston College from 1994-95. From 1991-92, he was the offensive coordinator for the London Monarchs of the World Football League, helping the team win the World Bowl in his first season. He entered the coaching arena in 1983 at his alma mater, Cincinnati, and then served on the offensive staffs at Kansas (1984-86), Vanderbilt (1987-89) and New Mexico (1990-91). Warhop and his wife, Lori, have a daughter, Olivia, and a son, Jacob.
