Professor George Varghese's research aims at making the Internet as fast and reliable as electric and telephone utilities. Mr. Varghese is one of 15 ACM fellows in networking worldwide. Dr. Varghese co-founded and was President & CTO of NetSift, a content processing technology based on high-speed networking and security that was acquired by Cisco. In 1996, he was one of only two computer scientists awarded the ONR Young Investigator award. For ten years, he was a researcher and Principal Engineer at DECNET where he worked on a precursor to the gigabit Ethernet, and helped write and design specifications for DEC's Bridge Architecture, later adopted as an IEEE standard. Dr. Varghese has been awarded 14 patents in the general field of Internet Algorithmics. An efficient IP lookup technique is licensed by more than eight companies, including Microsoft. His scheduling algorithm, called DRR, is found in many infrastructure routers, including Cisco's GSR. Together with Tony Li, Bill Lynch, Sharad Mehrotra, John Holst and other members of the engineering team, Dr. Varghese designed the forwarding engine for the Procket Router, which - running at 40 gigabits per second - was the world's fastest at the end of 2003. Dr. Varghese received his Ph.D. in computer science at MIT in 1993. |
