George Toye founded wiTHinc with Ruth Kedar in 1998 to transfer what he had learned during his tenure at Stanford University. His research on innovation, design, learning and knowledge management processes are the foundation for wiTHinc's next generation products that empower knowledge workers of today and tomorrow.
Dr. Toye brings considerable management experience to his position as President and CEO at wiTHinc. As former associate director of the Center for Design Research (CDR) at Stanford University, he was responsible for day-to-day operations and multi-million dollar budgets. He led research projects funded by government agencies such as National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), and corporate partners such as Lockheed-Martin, and Toshiba.
With over 20 years of experience with the internet, Toye's research at CDR focused on such enabling technologies that enhance group collaborations in engineering design and learning contexts. Central to this research was effective knowledge management (knowledge capture, organization, sharing and reuse). Explorations with innovative collaboration processes and technologies provided a rich understanding of the personal-social-cultural aspects of information sharing within communities of practice, along with the prerequisites, motivations and rewards for knowledge sharing.
Dr. Toye continues to be active in the Stanford community, currently at CDR as Consulting Professor in Mechanical Engineering - Design Division, and in earlier years as Consulting Associate Director of Learning Technology at Stanford University's Learning Lab.
Toye received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from U.C.Berkeley, and his Ph.D. with minor in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Toye has had broad interest in computers and information technologies since the early days of the microcomputer. His doctoral research on design of high-reliability fault tolerant mechatronic systems provided key technologies toward design of personal robots in service to the handicapped, More recently his studies have expanded, to better understand how applications of computer and information technologies serve, influence, and transform society.
