Mr. Short is Of Counsel in Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s Santa Barbara office and a member of the Tax, Trusts & Estates, and Business & Corporate Advisory groups. He specializes in family wealth matters, advising family offices, wealthy individuals and their businesses on the legal aspects of creating, preserving and disposing of wealth during lifetime and upon death. Mr. Short provides guidance on income, estate and gift tax matters, business, retirement and charitable planning, and business exit strategies. He also serves as special tax and trusts and estates counsel to insurance, accounting, business management, law and investment management firms. Mr. Short has represented founders of many closely-held companies from business formation and operation to successful exits, including mergers, sales, and public offering of securities. Mr. Short has created or restructured business and investment entity holdings for dozens of wealthy families and individuals. In addition, he has represented many members of the entertainment industry by forming record labels, production companies, technology companies, negotiating executive contracts, and handling many estate planning and administration engagements that involve the disposition of intellectual property (including copyrights, publishing catalogs and celebrity goodwill). A noted speaker, Mr. Short speaks on tax and tax-related subjects to many professional and lay organizations, including the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the USC Tax Institute, the Northern Trust of California Trust and Tax Forum, California CEB, the Santa Barbara Estate Planning Council, UCLA Extension, the NBA Players’ Agents Association and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, among others.
