Why is George Hamilton an example of diversity in action? It’s not because of where he was born or what he looks like, but because of how he embraces diversity of thought, culture and experience to drive excellent business results. As the President of Dow Automotive, George proactively sought a diverse team that provided a broad array of viewpoints, creative ideas and individual strengths. With direct reports that were Asian, European, Hispanic and African American men and women representing various regions around the world, he encouraged team members to provide perspectives unique to their cultures. By inspiring team members to consider, learn from and embrace each others’ varying ways of thinking and styles, he made it easier for them to communicate more effectively and execute swiftly guidance and insight that empowered the team to shift the business from simply selling materials to delivering complete, relevant industry solutions. This strategic approach provided a profitable departure from how Dow Automotive had operated for years and drove improved business results. George recently assumed a new position as the general manager of Dow Coating Solutions. As he confronts this next challenge in his 30-year Dow career, he knows putting diversity at the top of his leadership agenda will help him continue to drive improved business results. Embracing diversity has given him the freedom to creatively address problems and create transformative solutions. In this new position George will seek a wide range of capable people to form a team that is stronger because of their distinct qualities and range of human experience. And, that is an example of diversity anyone can follow. |
