George Henderson is the retired Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Burlington, Industries, Inc. He joined the company in 1974 as assistant to the treasurer. He held various staff and product management jobs until 1978 when he was transferred to London as executive vice president and general manager of European operations for Burlington Sportswear Fabrics. Henderson returned to the United States in 1982 as president of Burlington Denim. He was named a corporate group vice president in 1986, and given responsibility for the company’s Lees Carpet division in 1989, in addition to the Denim division. He was elected to Burlington’s Board of Directors in 1990. He was named President and Chief Operating Officer in April 1993. He became President and Chief Executive Officer on January 1, 1995, and was elected Chairman and CEO on February 4, 1998. Mr. Henderson retired from the company in November of 2003. A native of Atlanta, Henderson earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970 and a master’s degree in business administration from Emory University. He served two years as an officer in the U.S. Navy. Henderson is currently the Chairman of Propex Fabrics, the world’s largest manufacturer of carpet backing and geo-textiles. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of Bassett Furniture Industries, the Board of Visitors of The Kenan-Flagler School of Business at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and the Board of Advisors of Reading Connections of Greensboro. |
