George Matkov represents companies throughout the United States in complicated labor and industrial relations matters. He focuses his practice on labor contract negotiations, labor arbitration, practice before the National Labor Relations Board, compensation and benefits, OSHA, ERISA, EEO matters and related litigation. He is a recognized national authority in the areas of salaried and hourly compensation systems including engineered standards (incentive and measured daywork), gainsharing programs and job evaluation systems. George has extensive knowledge in employee, labor, contract and compensation issues involved in cellular and just-in-time (lean) manufacturing systems.
He develops pragmatic approaches to new issues in the workplace, including alternative dispute resolution, the evolving law of wrongful termination and privacy rights, and electronic monitoring of employee behavior and productivity. George is a leader in assisting employers develop retirement and health care options which are cost effective and acceptable to the employee base, including the negotiation of retirement and health care issues with major international unions. He was a founding partner of Matkov Salzman and practiced there for over 20 years prior to its merger with Ford & Harrison.
George is a frequent lecturer at colleges, universities and business forums on major business transactions including the purchase and sale of business units and related matters. His writings include chapters in the H.B. Maynard's Industrial Engineering Handbook. George authored a paper for the Annual National Academy of Arbitrators (Spring 2005 meeting) on neutrality clauses in arbitration entitled "Navigating the Uncharted Seas of Negotiated Tranquility: A Management Perspective on Employer Neutrality Agreements and Card Checks."
He is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Seventh and Eighth Circuits. He is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association.
George has served as an outside director on boards of directors and is currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors of Columbian Financial Group (Columbian Mutual Life Insurance Company domiciled in Binghamton, NY and its subsidiaries - Farmers and Traders Life Insurance Company domiciled in Syracuse, NY, Columbian Life Insurance Company domiciled in Chicago, IL, New Vision Service Corporation of New York [formerly Golden Eagle Sales Corp of Brooklyn, NY], Columbian Financial Services Corporation, Columbian Life Holdings, Inc., and National Safety Life Insurance Company, domiciled in Philadelphia, PA). George also serves as a Trustee of Knox College (Galesburg, IL).
