Gary Allenson Biography :

Gary Allenson is the 23rd Triple-A manager of the Norfolk Tides, and 2008 will be his 19th season as a manager or coach in professional baseball.

Allenson guided the Tides to a 69-74 record during the 2007 season, which was Norfolk’s first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Orioles. He has 789 wins in 13 seasons as a minor league manager, and has also spent six years as a coach in the major leagues. Allenson has twice managed International League clubs to the postseason, having accomplished the feat with the Ottawa Lynx in 2003 and the Louisville Bats in 1998. He was the bullpen coach for Boston in 1992 and 1993, then served as the third base coach for the Red Sox during the 1994 season. Allenson was also a coach for the Milwaukee Brewers from 2000 - 2002.

Allenson began his managerial career in the New York Yankees organization at Class-A Oneonta in 1987 and led the Tigers to the NY-Penn Championship in his second year. He managed Class-A Lynchburg in 1989 and 1990, taking the club to the playoffs in his first season. He then climbed up the Boston organizational ladder as a manager for Double-A New Britain in 1991 before joining the major league club the next year. After his stint with the Red Sox, he returned as a minor league manager in 1996 at Class A Charleston and at Double-A Jackson the next season.

As a player, Allenson spent seven seasons (1979 - 1985) as a catcher in the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, hitting .221 with 19 home runs and 131 RBI. He was also named the International League MVP in 1978 after he hit .299 with 20 home runs and 78 RBI for the Pawtucket Red Sox.
