Practice
Gabriela Alvarez-Avila is a partner in the Firm’s Mexico City office and a member of the International Arbitration Group. Her practice focuses on arbitration, international law and investment law. She has extensive experience in transactions involving a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure projects, electricity, telecommunications and oil and gas.
From 2000 to November 2007, Ms. Alvarez-Avila was a counsel with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in Washington, D.C., where she administered arbitration cases as secretary of tribunals hearing cases in English, Spanish and French. The arbitration proceedings in which she participated included claims based on bilateral investment treaties, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), national investment laws and international contracts.
Prior to joining ICSID, Ms. Alvarez-Avila worked as an associate for a Swiss law firm in Geneva, principally on international trade matters. From 1994 to 1996, she was an in-house counsel for Banco Mexicano Santander in Mexico City.
