Experience:
Friedrich Merz concentrates his practice on corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, and banking and finance.
He also has significant political experience, including serving as a member of the European Parliament (MEP) (1989-1994), as a member of the German Bundestag (MP) (1994 to date), as Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group (1998-2000, 2002-2004), and as Chairman of the CDU/CSU-Parliamentary Group and Minority Leader in the House (2000-2002).
Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Friedrich was a partner with two national law firms in Cologne (1989-2004) and at the German Association of Chemical Industry in Frankfurt/Bonn (1986-1989), and served as a judge in the Local Court in Saarbrücken (1985-1986). In addition to his native German, he speaks English and French.
