Fred M. Ackerson is counsel in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm's Chicago office. He is a member of the Tax Department, where his practice focuses on state and local tax planning and controversies.
Fred has 25 years experience in state and federal taxation. Fred is an experienced state tax professional and has represented numerous clients in administrative hearings and litigation. His experience includes unitary business group composition, business and non-business income controversies, financial organizations, income taxation of partnerships, net operating losses, franchise taxes, sales, use and excise taxes, nexus and Public Law 86-272, Due Process and Commerce Clause issues, the Illinois Uniformity Clause, and other constitutional issues. In the federal tax area, his practice concerns primarily corporate, partnerships/pass-through and investment transactions, including financial products, domestic and offshore investment funds, REITs and private equity deals.
Fred has received the highest rating of "AV" for legal ability and ethics from the independent Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating system. Fred was rated as a Super Lawyer in tax in the Illinois Super Lawyers by Law & Politics listing (2006) and as a Leading Tax Lawyer in the Leading Lawyers Network Tax Lawyers listing.
