Always interested in law, but not interested in law school, Eric embarked early in his post-collegiate career on a mission to prove he was no slacker and to find the ideal way to combine his interests in law and business. From his internships at The Legal Aid of Nebraska and the Nebraska Attorney General's Office, he came to know how cumbersome dealing with large amounts of paper documents can be. He claims there were times at the AG's Office where he spent a week unable to find his desk behind boxes upon boxes full of paper. It was at this time he gained a strong sympathy for litigators and also came to appreciate the power of Sanction. "I would highly recommend Sanction to anyone going through what I did," says Eric. He also gained a strong understanding for the litigation process, through his work at both organizations. At Legal Aid of Nebraska, which dealt primarily with civil litigation (divorces, bankruptcies, social security cases) and juvenile cases, he helped with document production and correspondence between clients and attorneys. At the Nebraska Attorney General's Office, he worked in the inmate litigation department that handled complaints and appeals from state inmates. There he did case preparation (organizing and reproducing huge files), and learned firsthand how onerous it can be trying to find one document in a virtual sea of documents while facing a looming trial deadline. He also helped with case research, locating documents pertaining to particular issues, as well as serving time wading through inmate codes and updating them regularly. Eric graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and a concentration in Political Science. Beyond his professional qualifications, one distinct quality which makes him a good fit at Verdict Systems is his status as a self-professed "huge Nebraska Cornhusker fan." (Though Mike claims this had nothing to do with why he was hired!) A big sports fan in general, Eric was actually born in Omaha, NE but moved to Sioux City, IA at an early age, where he says he grew up. His sister actually graduated from Iowa State (a wanna-be rival "Big 12" school) and is an avid Cyclone fan, so they don't talk much during football season. Christmas dinners can be quite quiet. Since moving to the "Valley of the Sun" shortly after graduation, Eric is still adjusting to the Arizona heat, but he quickly adds that the "dry" heat is much better than the humidity in his native Midwest, so he's not complaining. |
