Dr. Elena Afonina, Director, Molecular and Cellular Biology, has an extensive experience in HIV research and developing cell-based assays and functional protein assays for high throughput screening. She holds M.Sc. in Chemistry and Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from Moscow State University. Dr. Afonina was a Post Doctoral Fellow in the Molecular Virology and Carcinogenesis Laboratory, National Cancer Institute, and gained extensive practical experience in virology, and in modern molecular and cellular biology research methods. She joined the Structural Biochemistry Program at NCI-Frederick in 1998, where she developed cell-based assays in support of their target-based drug design studies in HIV and cancer. Prior to joining Sequoia Pharmaceuticals she directed the Cell Biology and Assay Development Laboratory at Tibotec, Inc. She participated in external collaborations and served as Project Leader in a multidisciplinary project for small molecule discovery of HIV-1 targets. Dr. Afonina publishes her work in internationally respected journals. |
