Dr. Dirk Pohl is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery Rechtsanwälte Steuerberater LLP based in its Munich office. He is the head of the German Tax Practice Group and a member of the Tax Department Executive Committee. His practice focuses on international tax law, tax litigation, corporate tax law (including group taxation, transfer pricing, corporate finance) and estate planning. He was named a leading tax lawyer in Chambers Global 2007 and in the highly rated German JUVE Handbuch 2007/2008 and as a leading tax litigator in the International Tax Review.
Prior to joining the Firm, Dirk was the head of the Munich tax department of Raupach & Wollert-Elmendorff Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH, the legal arm of Deloitte & Touche in Germany. While there, he worked closely with our of counsel Professor Arndt Raupach to build up this practice.
Dirk has extensive experience in dealing with the tax issues of multinationals. He recently advised an international group during a complete change of its manufacturing and distribution functions. He represents CLT-UFA S.A., the major shareholder of which is Bertelsmann media, in the European Court in Luxemburg regarding the issue whether the German corporate tax rate for a permanent establishment is in accordance with the EU contract. He has also played an active role in sophisticated planning for family businesses.
Dirk is a frequent lecturer on international tax law and has written numerous articles and several books on tax issues. He is a guest lecturer at the Bundesfinanzakademie (i.e. the federal university of the German tax administration).
In 1997, Dirk received the Gerhard-Thoma Award of the Institute of Tax Advisors, Cologne for his Ph.D thesis.
Dirk is a member of the Munich bar for attorneys-at-law (Rechtsanwälte) and for tax advisors (Steuerberater).
