Dionne Calhoun is in his third season with the Mavericks as the assistant athletic trainer after having served two seasons in the same capacity with the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL.
Calhoun has also spent the past two summers as the athletic trainer for the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program in Africa. This past summer, he served as an athletic trainer at both the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago and Pete Newell’s Big Man Camp.
Prior to acquiring a full-time position with San Francisco, Calhoun spent the 2002 season as an intern for the 49ers and was a training camp intern from 1999-2001. Calhoun worked the early part of 2003 as a trainer at Pacific Thex and was responsible for implementing rehab programs.
Prior to the 49ers, he worked at South Bay Spine and Sport as an athletic trainer, designing and implementing post-operative rehab programs and assessing patients. Calhoun received a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, with an emphasis in athletic training, from San Diego State University in 2000.
After graduation, he was the head football trainer at Marion Catholic (Imperial Beach, Calif.) High School. Born in Compton, Calif., Calhoun graduated from Banning (Wilmington, Calif.) High in 1995.
He is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), the National Basketball Trainers’ Association (NBTA) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). |
