Mr. Dickie has successfully resolved jury and non-jury cases involving a variety of business and commercial matters, construction, securities, product liability and professional liability claims.
While in college, Mr. Dickie played varsity football. In law school, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Hubert L. Will, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and taught constitutional law at DePaul University. In addition, he attended Exeter College in Oxford, England.
Mr. Dickie is a frequent presenter at legal and professional conferences.
Experience
Mr. Dickie’s trial experience has been diverse and extensive. He has tried cases to judgment and verdict throughout the United States. He has represented officers, directors, and corporations in a variety of matters including securities fraud, insider trading, breach of fiduciary duty, accounting malpractice, Securities Exchange arbitration, usurpation of corporate opportunities and employment discrimination claims. He is actively involved in construction litigation, professional and product liability claims, and has extensive experience in class action matters representing both the class and defendants.
Among his litigation accomplishments, Mr. Dickie:
Successfully defended a major wholesale supplier of wood products against an age discrimination charge brought in the U.S. District Court. Following the close of evidence after a 4-week trial, the trial court granted defendant’s motion for a directed verdict.
Defended the Village of River Forest in a 3-month zoning trial. Before plaintiffs rested, they moved to dismiss their case voluntarily after calling only 5 of their 30 witnesses.
Won reinstatement for a neurosurgeon after an immediate summary suspension by the department chairman at a major Midwest medical institution.
Successfully set aside certain fraudulent conveyances in the leveraged buyout of Wieboldt’s by a major Midwestern retailer.
Successfully defended a wealthy international family in a 9-month trial involving a multi-million dollar claim brought against it by a disgruntled sibling.
Successfully guided Dynamics Corporation of America through the landmark litigation crisis arising from its tender offer, proxy fight and takeover of CTS.
Represented the outside directors of the VMS Securities class action and resolved the matter without any personal liability to the clients.
Successfully prosecuted a policyholder’s multi-million dollar claim for environmental cleanup costs, including reimbursements of attorney’s fees and costs.
Was lead trial counsel in the recent Securities and Exchange Commission action against the former Chairman of the Board of Supercuts for insider trading.
Was trial counsel for two minority shareholders who sued to enforce a drag-along rights provision and secured a $78 million judgment.
Was lead trial counsel in a breach of contract action against Michael Jordan for his failing to make the movie Heaven is a Playground, a novel by Rick Telendar.
Defended the Empress Casino in a sex harassment/hostile work environment class action lawsuit and successfully defeated the motion for class certification.
Won a jury trial in the U.S. District Court of Fort Worth, Texas involving an indemnification claim brought by the former President and COO of United Airlines against his former employer, American Airlines, by reason of his service at the request of American Airlines on the Board of the Republic Bank Houston.
Won a 5-month jury trial in the U.S. District Court in Minnesota which alleged breach of contract and defamation on behalf of the nation’s largest manufacturer of private label granola food products.
