Dr. David W. Sykora is a Senior Managing Engineer in Exponent's Civil Engineering practice and leader of the Geo Group a group of experts at Exponent that specialize in geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. Dr. Sykora's specialties are geotechnical engineering and earthquake engineering. He has about 25 years of experience in design construction seismic analysis geophysical methods and failure analysis. He has been responsible for the geotechnical design of several hundred projects. He has a wide range of project experience including the planning feasibility analysis design construction and monitoring phases for reservoir and mine tailings dams embankments flood control channels and basins spillways pipelines commercial buildings hospitals schools manufacturing facilities oil refineries nuclear power plants gaseous diffusion plants retaining and revetment walls bridges parks recreation areas and residential developments. Geotechnical issues have included: geotechnical drilling and sampling micro-tunneling slope stability and landslides expansive soils collapsible soils foundation design earth pressures settlement creep moisture intrusion earthquake ground shaking liquefaction lateral spread pavement distress soil-structure interaction soil-slab interaction soil-pipe interaction fly ash amendment and differing site conditions. Dr. Sykora received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and an M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a registered Civil and Geotechnical Engineer in the state of California and a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Arizona Colorado Idaho Illinois Missouri Nevada and New Mexico. Dr. Sykora also serves as an instructor for a graduate course in Advanced Foundation Engineering at the California Polytechnic University in Pomona. He has international experience in Venezuela South Korea Japan Turkey Egypt and Peru. |
