David M. Tennant is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Washington, D.C. office, and is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department. David counsels clients primarily on patent related matters.
David has counseled clients on establishing, developing, maintaining and leveraging patent portfolios to maximize value. He has also represented a client in numerous patent licensing negotiations and served as lead counsel in these negotiations. Additionally, he has counseled clients on patent invalidity, enforceability and infringement studies.
He has litigated various complex patent cases (across the United States) concerning a wide variety of technologies including computer servers, semiconductor processes, semiconductor devices, and circuits. An example of David's litigation experience includes representing Intergraph Corporation against Hewlett-Packard resulting in a large settlement.
David's patent procurement experience includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications for various major corporations, both domestic and international, in a broad range of technologies. Some technologies include semiconductor devices, semiconductor processes, circuits, lithography and electromechanical systems. David also has experience in successfully reinstating numerous U.S. patents that have lapsed for a variety of reasons.
David has worked abroad directly with a Japanese client for extended periods time throughout his career, and has developed a keen understanding of Japanese corporate culture. He also served as in-house counsel for a top Japanese-based international consumer electronics manufacturer.
David received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark office.
