David Pumphrey joined Heidrick & Struggles as a Partner in its Sydney office in May 1993. He has a wide network of contacts and significant experience as an international executive search consultant, built up over 19 years in the industry. He works extensively in the areas of education, board appointments and legal services.
Previously, he had been with Spencer Stuart in the firm's Sydney office since 1984, beginning as an Associate Consultant. In November 1988, he was elected a Partner and Senior Director of that firm worldwide. Between 1989 and 1991, he served as Managing Director of the Australian practice, and was a member of the firm's worldwide Personnel and Professional Practices Committees between 1988 and 1993. During his nine years with the firm, he worked exclusively at senior levels in the professional and financial services, funds management, government, resources, manufacturing, consumer goods and real estate sectors.
After business school, he had joined McKinsey & Co. Inc. as a Consultant in the London office, working on assignments in the UK, Holland and Ireland. He had been in line management in the early 1970s, and was Managing Director of a number of consumer durables and manufacturing companies in the UK prior to relocating to Australia in 1981, where he became General Manager of a hotel and motel group, and then Managing Director of Milton Bradley.
Education
David earned a master's degree in economics and political science from St. Andrews University in Scotland. He received MBAs from the Cranfield School of Management in England, and Harvard Business School.

He is currently a Member of the Bell Shakespeare Foundation, and is a past Director of the Bell Shakespeare Company and the National and New South Wales Societies of Multiple Sclerosis, and a past President of the Harvard Club of Australia. |
