Dave Varwig is manager of safety and health for AEP Ohio and is responsible for overseeing the safety performance of all employees throughout the AEP Ohio service territory.
Before joining AEP Varwig spent most of the last 30 years in the electric utility industry with Toledo Edison and Detroit Edison. His field experience in fossil plant and nuclear operations as a nuclear instrumentation and controls technician led to promotions into management roles such as a safety trainer coordinator specialist assessor advisor consultant and manager.
Varwig possesses both undergraduate and graduate degrees in management and organizational management respectively from Spring Arbor University. He is also a certified safety professional certified safety and health manager and a certified utility safety administrator. He also served as a United States Coast Guardsman.
Varwig has served in numerous volunteer leadership positions with the American Red Cross in the greater Toledo area involving first aid and CPR training and community safety initiatives and was a long serving volunteer in the utilities division for the annual Michigan Safety Conference
