David A. Herpe is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm’s Chicago office. As a member of the Private Client Department, he counsels families, family offices, business owners, executives and individuals on all aspects of sophisticated estate and wealth transfer planning. His experience includes the preparation, administration and construction of wills and trusts, charitable gift planning, formation and operation of private foundations, formation and reorganization of closely held corporations, partnerships and LLCs, complex insurance planning, leveraged wealth transfer techniques and family-owned business succession.
David is a contributing author to Estate and Personal Financial Planning (West Group 2001) and was the co-author of a two volume treatise entitled Illinois Estate Planning, Will Drafting and Estate Administration Forms-Practice (Butterworth, 2d. ed., 1994). David has contributed many articles to Trusts and Estates magazine and is a past member of its editorial advisory board.
He has served on the faculty of the American Bankers Association National Trust Schools and has spoken on tax and estate planning topics for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the Notre Dame Tax & Estate Planning Institute, the Iowa Trust Association, the Duke University Annual Estate Planning Conference, the University of Denver Advanced Estate Planning Symposium, the Florida Legal Education Association, the Kentucky Institute on Federal Taxation, the New York State Bar Association Trusts & Estates Institute, the California CPA Society, as well as other local and national professional groups.
David is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, an international association of lawyers who have been recognized as outstanding practitioners in the estate planning field. He is a member and past president of the Chicago Estate Planning Council. He currently serves as a member for the WTTW 11/WFMT Planned Giving Advisory Committee and the Legacies and Endowments Advisory Committee of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, and has served on similar committees in the past for the American Cancer Society (Illinois Division), United Charities of Chicago and the Arthritis Foundation (Illinois Chapter).
In law school, David was associate editor of the University of Chicago Law Review. He is a member of the Illinois State Bar and admitted to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the U.S. Tax Court. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Law, and was selected by his peers for listing in The Best Lawyers in America, Illinois Leading Lawyers, and Illinois Super Lawyers.
