Daphne W. Trotter is a partner in the Environmental Group, resident in McDermott Will & Emery LLP's Washington, D.C. office.
Daphne is both an environmental litigator and a transactional lawyer. She frequently counsels clients on the role of environmental issues and the management of associated risks in corporate, real estate and lending transactions. In this role, she has:
Regularly served as lead environmental counsel for both purchasers and sellers in mergers and acquisitions involving facilities in a variety of industries, including, for example, solid waste disposal, printing, heart valve manufacturing, bearing manufacturing, building supply, petroleum storage, aircraft maintenance and munitions testing and disposal.
Counseled clients in the glass manufacturing, building supply, petroleum storage, printing and bearing manufacturing industries, among others, in the satisfaction of cleanup obligations under "transaction triggered" laws, such as New Jersey's Industrial Site Recovery Act and the Connecticut Transfer Act.
Served as lead environmental counsel to a major petroleum company in connection with a substantial corporate reorganization, managing the effort to identify and update over 9,000 environmental permits and other governmental authorizations.
Overseen the remediation of properties in conjunction with state regulatory authorities across the country.

Defense of a major New York City hospital against the State of New York in connection with alleged violations of Clean Air Act permitting and Reasonably Available Control Technology requirements.
Representation of a major athletic clothing manufacturer in a Clean Water Act enforcement action brought by the United States and a related permitting action before the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Advising a multinational corporation in connection with assessment of over 250,000 claims under settlement agreements to resolve personal injury claims arising from alleged exposure to asbestos.
Regular representation of defendants in asbestos-related personal injury cases.
While in law school, Daphne was the managing editor of The American University Journal of International Law and Policy, which in the Fall of 1990 published her article addressing European community efforts to provide community-wide recognition of professional credentials. She also received the T. Morton McDonald Scholarship Award for Excellence in Legal Research in 1991. Daphne is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and the National Association of Women Lawyers.
