Daniel Christus is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP, and is based in its Chicago office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department. Prior to joining McDermott, Daniel practiced in a full-service intellectual property law firm for over twenty years.
Daniel’s practice focuses on obtaining and litigating domestic and foreign patents and trademarks; the preparation of patent and trademark clearance opinions; and the performance of due diligence investigations for companies and individuals considering the purchase of businesses.
In 2002, Daniel was part of a patent infringement defense trial team that, after a nine-day federal jury trial in Milwaukee, defeated a patent owner’s demands for both an injunction and over $100 million in damages. Daniel has successfully represented both plaintiffs and defendants in patent, trademark and unfair competition trials and appeals in many U.S. district courts and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Daniel is registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He has successfully represented clients in inter partes and ex parte proceedings in the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and in the Board of Appeals and Patent Interferences, of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Daniel has represented clients in many different technologies and businesses. He has primarily worked with clients in the food, beverage and medical products industries, and in the chemical and mechanical fields. He has experience in heavy mechanical industries, and has prepared and prosecuted patent applications for mobile boat hoists, gantry and industrial cranes, and mobile mining equipment.
He has lectured on intellectual property issues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; at an American University conference on international law; and before the Milwaukee Bar Association.
Daniel is a member of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC) and the State Bar of Wisconsin. He was President of the Hellenic Bar Association of Illinois in 1998-1999.
He is admitted to practice in Wisconsin and Illinois, the United States District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois, the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the Eleventh Circuit and the Federal Circuit.
