Dana J. Lesemann Managing Director and Deputy General Counsel Dana J. Lesemann is Managing Director and Deputy General Counsel in the Washington, DC Office, where she manages domestic and multi-national engagements involving data preservation and analysis in connection with internal corporate investigations and electronic discovery. She is frequently called upon to prepare detailed reports on investigative findings for use by counsel and presentation to corporate boards. In addition, she has performed compliance audits of, for example, the performance of out-sourced IT vendors with corporate data retention policies and corporate compliance with customer privacy policies. She also focuses on critical infrastructure protection projects for corporate clients, non-profits and nationally recognized think tanks. She has helped organize national conferences for law enforcement and private sector participants in infrastructure protection and provided strategic advice and reports on subjects related to infrastructure protection. Ms. Lesemann s prior government service has involved conducting highly significant multi-agency investigations and reporting on investigative and policy findings. She served as Counsel to the Senate and House Intelligence Committees Joint Inquiry Into the September 11th Attacks, which was responsible for determining whether the attacks could have been prevented and what changes should be made to the United States Intelligence Community to prevent future attacks. She worked on the team investigating the performance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation s Counterterrorism Division and assisted in crafting the final report of the Joint Inquiry. Prior to her tenure on the Joint Inquiry, Ms. Lesemann worked as an attorney-advisor in the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review (OIPR) in the United States Department of Justice representing the United States before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), which reviews wiretap and other electronic surveillance and search warrant applications in national security cases. Her work at OIPR involved supervising highly sensitive and complex investigations and marshaling the requisite predicate information in formal written applications for presentation to the FISC. Before joining Stroz Friedberg, Ms. Lesemann served as Senior Investigative Counsel for The Investigative Project, the Washington, D.C.-based research institute that tracks, analyzes, and reports on terrorism in the United States and abroad. She directed projects analyzing data derived from criminal prosecutions after the September 11th attacks, reform of the U.S. Intelligence Community, money laundering and alternative methods used to finance terrorism activities in the United States and abroad, domestic intelligence collection, and other issues involving international terrorism. Working for the Federal Trade Commission, Ms. Lesemann prosecuted consumer fraud cases including use of web sites for undercover investigations and for consumer education. She designed and managed Project Scholarscam, a significant law enforcement and consumer education initiative targeting businesses that offered fraudulent grant and scholarship services to low and middle-income high-school students. In 1999 Ms. Lesemann was designated a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and, in that capacity, prosecuted criminal investment fraud cases. She obtained a conviction in a criminal contempt case involving the violation of an FTC injunction and conducted a grand jury investigation of a large multinational investment fraud case. Ms. Lesemann taught a seminar at the FTC on the Internet and Computing, and taught Legal Research and Writing at George Washington University s National Law Center to first-year law students from 1997 to 2001. She speaks frequently to law enforcement groups and was a guest lecturer on national security law at Duke University Law School in November 2003. In 2006, Ms. Lesemann taught a summer course on Terrorism and Counterterrorism at the University of Otago Faculty of Law in New Zealand. Ms. Lesemann served as a law clerk to the Honorable Phyllis A. Kravitch of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. She received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania with honors and her J.D. from the Duke University School of Law, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif and an Article Editor of the Duke Law Journal. She is admitted to bars of the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and Florida. Ms. Lesemann is a frequent speaker on digital forensics and cyber-security issues, including Continuing Legal Education presentations at Bar Association, legal education and ethics conferences. She has also authored articles for leading legal and information security publications
