Dan has an undergraduate degree in mathematics (with honors) from Oberlin College, Ohio. He received a Fulbright grant to study mathematics in Budapest, Hungary for one year. He received his master's degree in computer science from the University of Minnesota with a 4.0 G.P.A. He worked at Net Perceptions as an algorithms engineer from 1997 until 2003, helping to produce some of their most successful algorithms. Net Perceptions was a leader in collaborative filtering and personalization, and later, online marketing. Dan left Net Perceptions to join the GroupLens research group at the University ofMinnesota in 2003 as its staff scientist. He has co-authored several papers on using social science to improve the experiences of participants in online communities. |
