Mr. Sandman, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1970, and a law degree in 1973, both conferred Cum Laude. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1971, and in 1989, he participated in the Stanford Executive Program.
After his graduation from Ohio State in 1973, Mr. Sandman joined Marathon Oil Company in Findlay, Ohio, where he served in a series of positions in the marketing, antitrust, hard minerals and oil and gas law areas.
In 1978, Mr. Sandman was transferred to Marathon's London Office where he participated in Brae Field contract negotiations, served as secretary of several subsidiaries and administered the company's Nigerian legal affairs. He returned to Findlay in 1981 when he was named senior marketing counsel. He was promoted to general attorney for refining & marketing in 1983, and later assumed additional responsibilities for real estate law matters.
In February 1986, Mr. Sandman was named general attorney for U.S. exploration and production law, and was relocated to Marathon's Houston Office. Shortly thereafter, in July 1986, he was elected general counsel and secretary of Marathon. He was elected secretary and assistant general counsel of the former USX Corporation in Pittsburgh in 1992, and elected general counsel and secretary in 1993.
In 1996, as senior vice president of human resources for USX, Mr. Sandman's duties were expanded to include overall responsibility for human resources, as well as direct responsibility for executive compensation. The public affairs function was added to his responsibility in 1998. He assumed his current position and was elected to the United States Steel Corporation board of directors in January 2002.
Mr. Sandman is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Ohio Bar Associations. Since 1988, Mr. Sandman has served on the board of directors of Roppe Corporation in Fostoria, Ohio. In 1990, he was elected to the board of trustees of the USX Foundation, now called the United States Steel Foundation, and to the Marathon Oil Company board of directors in 1992. He was elected to the USX Corporate Policy Committee in 1993, and in 2000, to the Marathon Ashland Petroleum board of managers.
Mr. Sandman currently serves on the boards of the Heinz Regional History Center, the Carnegie Science Center, and the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance. He is also a member of the executive committee for the Carnegie Hero Commission, and is a member of the De Tocqueville Society. In 2006, he was appointed co-chair of the Pennsylvania Corporate Counsel Roundtable by Chief Justice Ralph Cappy.
He has previously volunteered with United Way of Houston, the Houston Grand Opera, the Big Brothers organization and the Hancock County Mental Health Society. From 1993 to 1998, he served on the board of trustees of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and in 1994 he was the Pittsburgh-area United Way campaign chairman for U. S. Steel. |
