Charlie Spiegel is a real estate attorney with a wide range of background and experience in the area of acquisition, development, leasing and disposition of commercial real estate in California, generally representing retailers. He currently represents a major national retailer in its development of retail projects throughout Northern and Central California, as well as clients in multi-family and senior housing. Prior to joining Stein & Lubin in 2004, Mr. Spiegel served as Executive Director of Our Family Coalition, a San Francisco family advocacy organization. Previously, he practiced at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, initially in its New York office and then assisting the formation of the firm's California real estate practice as a partner in its San Francisco office. At Sonnenschein, he participated in all aspects of real estate and finance, including subsidized housing, bond and structured finance and derivatives. From 1981 to 1984, he served as a Consulting Manager in regional real estate and other economic forecasts at Data Resources Inc. (DRI/McGraw Hill, NYC). Mr. Spiegel graduated from Wesleyan University in 1981 as a Junior Fellow in Economics, where he was also editor of the Wesleyan Hermes. He earned his law JD degree, cum laude, from New York University, where he graduated Order of the Coif and with a Diploma in Real Estate Analysis in 1987. He received the American Jurisprudence Award (Constitutional Law), and served as Senior Articles Editor and Author, Annual Survey of American Law. Representative Matters Represented various parties in tax advantaged multi family projects including lenders and equity investors (GECC, Wells Fargo, Old Oakland Apt's.). Represented diverse lenders and developers in nationwide real estate financings (shopping centers, office buildings, multi-family residential, sale leasebacks, ground leases, conduit financing, construction loans) and loan workouts (including Citicorp Real Estate, Credit Lyonnais, Wells Fargo). Represented retailers in numerous shopping center development projects (including Lucky Lakeshore Plaza in SF). Prepared ISDA documentation for derivative transactions (interest rate locks among other products representing Bank of America). Represented lessors and lessees in commercial, retail and office transactions (Citicorp Real Estate). Participated in several $100+ million multi property multi state financings (Macy's). Particpated in bankruptcy matters (Clark Oil restructuring for New York Life Insurance).
