Charles R. Tonge, Vice Chairman of Harris Bankcorp Inc., is responsible for leading and directing all acquisition, branch expansion, and integration initiatives.
Tonge develops, identifies and executes acquisitions of new retail, commercial and other businesses that fit within the Chicagoland Banking expansion strategy. He is responsible for acquisition identification through contract signing and integration. He works closely with the Office of Strategic Management and its U.S. acquisition team in developing and executing an acquisition strategy. He also supports client acquisition and retention efforts for all Harris businesses, assessing appropriate new locations for branches and the viability of existing branches, and managing Harris' ATM network. .
Prior to his most recent position, in 2003, Tonge was appointed to serve as Executive Vice President, Distribution Management and Deputy Head, Chicagoland Banking, where he was responsible for managing all distribution support activities for Harris Bank. His responsibilities included supporting all back-office sales efforts and ensuring consistency of branch standards and communications across all divisions. More importantly, Tonge also assumed the lead executive role for the planning and management of the integration of all acquisitions.
Tonge's experience includes serving as President of Harris Bank Barrington, Illinois. He began his banking career in 1969 at Continental Bank and, in 1971, he moved to First National Bank of Barrington . In 1984, he was named President of the community bank that eventually was acquired by Harris Bankcorp, the parent of Harris Bank, in 1985.
Tonge is a member of the Board of Directors of Harris Bank Barrington and a Director of Harris Bankcorp Inc., and Harris Trust and Savings Bank. He received a bachelor's degree in Economics from North Park College of Chicago in 1968.
