Charles R. Black, President of Tampa Electric Co., joined the company in 1973 and during the next seven years held various engineering positions within the Production Department. From 1980 to 1989, Black held various management positions including Budget Director for Tampa Electric.
In 1989, he was named director-Engineering and Construction for TECO Power Services. In December 1990, he was named Vice President-Engineering and Construction for TECO Power Services. In December 1991, he was named Vice President-Project Management for Tampa Electric. In that capacity he was responsible for the engineering and construction of Tampa Electric’s Polk Power Station, a 250 MW IGCC Unit.
Black was named Vice President-Energy Supply, in December 1996 with responsibilities that included five power plants, fuels, environmental and engineering departments.
In 1999, the company named Black Vice President-Energy Supply, Engineering and Construction with responsibilities for Tampa Electric’s Generation Expansion Program and the repowering of the Gannon Station and its conversion to the Bayside Power Station.
In September 2003, he was named Senior Vice President-Generation for TECO Energy Inc. In October 2004 he became President of Tampa Electric.
Black is actively involved with the Gulf Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He presently serves on the College of Engineering Advisory Board at the University of South Florida. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.
Black earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1973 from the University of South Florida. He is a native of Spartanburg, S.C. He is married and has two sons.
