As managing principal and vice chairman, Chuck Berman is responsible for MacFarlane Partners’ urban investment activities, which include building and maintaining strategic relationships with new and existing development partners; sourcing, negotiating, underwriting and closing prospective investments; and overseeing investments during the development and stabilization.Chuck has 25 years of real estate investment, development and management experience. Prior to joining MacFarlane Partners, he was founder and president of Avalon Properties, a publicly traded real estate investment trust that, through a subsequent merger, became Avalon Bay Communities, the third-largest residential REIT in the United States. Earlier, he served as the Northeast regional partner and member of the management committee of Trammell Crow Residential Company, a national developer and operator of multifamily residential properties.Chuck began his real estate career as a vice president with Eastdil Realty, and was a partner of American Realty Capital, a provider of equity capital for real estate development projects. He also is the former chairman and chief executive officer of Versity.com, an Internet start-up company that served the college market.Chuck is a member of the Young Presidents Organization and the Urban Land Institute, where he serves on one of its Mixed-Use Councils. He also serves on the boards of directors of Rent.com, an online apartment rental company; and Customized Structures, Inc., a modular-home manufacturer. He is chairman of the New Canaan (Conn.) Housing Authority and a former board member of GetActive.com, SafeRent.com and Fairfield 2000, a non-profit developer of affordable housing in Connecticut.Chuck holds a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Amherst College. |
