Charles D. Stewart, a senior partner with Spain & Gillon, concentrates in litigation, representing life and health insurance companies, financial institutions and employees and agents in defense of first-party actions, particularly fraud, bad faith and punitive damage claims, and class actions. Mr. Stewart also practices in personal injury and products liability defense, employment defense, insurance coverage and surety and fidelity defense. Mr. Stewart has been in continuous practice since 1975, having served as a contracting officer for the U.S. Army in Vietnam in 1970, and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1971 to 1975. He practices in all state and federal courts in Alabama and is admitted to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Stewart was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 1968. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1965 and received his Juris Doctor from Cumberland School of Law in 1968. He is a member of Alabama State Bar, Birmingham Bar Association (having served on the Executive Committee), Alabama Defense Lawyers Association (previous vice president), International Association of Defense Counsel, Defense Research Institute, The Association of Life Insurance Counsel, and the American Bar Association. Mr. Stewart is a faculty member for the Alabama Bar Institute for Continuing Education and is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education and legal association seminars.
