Charles McCrary is President and Chief Executive Officer of Alabama Power Company, which provides electricity to 1.4 million customers in Alabama.
Mr. McCrary joined Alabama Power during the summer of 1970 following his freshman year at Auburn University and has held various positions of increasing responsibility within Southern Company.
After earning his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Auburn, Mr. McCrary worked for Alabama Power in Engineering, System Planning, Fuels and Environmental Affairs, giving him hands-on experience assuring Alabama a reliable, affordable, environmentally-sensitive supply of electric power.
He went on to serve as Vice President for Southern's nuclear power company, as Senior and, then, Executive Vice President at Alabama Power. He later held the positions of President of Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing, Chief Production Officer of Southern Company and President of Southern Power Company.
A family-centered man, his roots are deep in Alabama and Birmingham. Mr. McCrary was born in Birmingham in 1951. He graduated from Shades Valley High School, and, in addition to his B.S. from Auburn, earned a J.D. from Birmingham School of Law. He is married to the former Phyllis Brantley of Birmingham and they are the parents of two sons, Doug and Alex.
Integrally involved in the Birmingham community, Mr. McCrary serves as Chairman of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama and is Chairman of the Birmingham Urban Revitalization Partnership. He serves on the boards of AmSouth Bancorporation, Children First Foundation, Business Council of Alabama, Children's Hospital, Birmingham Museum of Art, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc., Metropolitan Development Board, Protective Life Corporation, and the State of Alabama Archives and History Foundation. He also is a member of the Auburn University Board of Trustees, the Auburn Alumni Engineering Council and the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame.
A sometimes golfer, he is a frequent Harley-Davidson rider and, as a frustrated mechanic, an avid restorer of old cars and jukeboxes. |
