Chuck serves as co-chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property group. He practices both intellectual property and technology law, counseling clients regarding patent and trademark matters and litigates intellectual property cases. With over 30 years of legal and engineering experience, Chuck has been involved in the full scope of intellectual property practice, including negotiating employment and licensing contracts, technology transfers and lawsuit settlements. Chuck provides counseling, strategy and dispute resolution in the procurement and enforcement of patents and trademarks. He handles federal and state litigation claims on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants. His diverse litigation and alternative dispute resolution experience includes patents, copyrights, trade secrets, employment contracts, unfair competition, warranties, product configuration and trademarks. Chuck successfully has participated in Markman proceedings and in bench and jury trials in significant intellectual property litigations. He has argued and briefed appeals in the 2nd, 6th, 10th and Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal as well as in multiple state courts of appeal. He works closely with both publicly and privately-held companies, advising domestic and international clients on intellectual property needs. Chuck’s experience and management skills enable him to oversee teams of intellectual property and litigation attorneys in handling large-scale litigation claims. Chuck is an active member of the Northern District of Ohio Alternative Dispute Resolution Panel and has acted as a mediator or special master in many intellectual property disputes. A former director of the Cleveland Patent Law Association, Chuck is a member of the IP Advisory Council of the University of Akron Law School and is also active in the American, Ohio and Cleveland Bar Associations. He was recognized as a Leading Lawyer in Chambers USA and has been listed as one of The Best Lawyers in America in the area of intellectual property law for more than 10 years. From 1967 until 1970, Chuck served as an examiner in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He was with the intellectual property law firm of Renner, Otto, Boiselle & Lyon from 1970 through 1987. Chuck began his tenure with Calfee as a partner in 1988 and has been a member of the firm’s executive committee since 1992. |
